ArchiveThe city of Messaure in Jokkmokk municipality no longer exists, but the site still holds great historical significance.
Messaure was once home to one of the largest hydropower plants in Europe. When it was still a thriving society, the hydro power generated here supplied nearly half of Sweden's electricity needs. Born alongside the colossal dam, Messaure expanded into a flourishing community accommodating up to 3000 residents during the middle of the 1900s, with schools, churches, grocery stores, a cinema, and more. However, over time the community gradually depopulated, leading to a decline in services and the closure of many of its operations.
Today, all that remains of Messaure is a road sign bearing its name, as a reminder of its existence.
