Ann Böttcher

Struggle and Endurance, Great Individuality, Courage and True Character (America I–III), Ann Böttcher. Luleåbiennalen 2013.

Ann Böttcher (b. 1973, Sweden), is an artist based in Sweden.

This piece and its titles originate from the last chapter in a book about trees, shrubs and home gardening from the 1940s. The language and the way nature is described are typical for the era, both romantic and on the verge of nationalistic. Many drawings of sublime nature also depict extreme romanticism where the line to nationalism is fine. Böttcher’s interest lies in the relationship between nature and nationalism and the study of iconography of nature as a symbol for establishing territorial claims or national identity.

Ann Böttcher grew up in Bruzaholm, Sweden, but is based in Malmö. With a variety of different techniques, she explores the relationship between nature, nationalism and tradition. Behind her methodical approach and subtle execution lies a strong social and historical knowledgebase.
