LB°27 — News
The upcoming edition of Luleåbiennalen, the oldest art biennial in Scandinavia, takes place 35 years after the first one and will be its 20th edition. Join us on a throwback journey through the biennial’s history.
Since 1991, artists from all over the world have presented their works through the exhibitions and activities of Luleåbiennalen. Over the years, the biennial has been transformed in many ways together with the art world and society in general. It’s locations, organisers and even it’s name has shifted, but it remains one of the most important platforms for international contemporary art in Norrbotten.
In 2025 we initiate a retrospective series, where we look back on previous editions, and we invite you to take part of artworks, artistic practices, activities and stories from the years that have passed. Some stories may be new to you, and some you might remember from your own previous visits.
In a first teaser throwback, we look back on the ice skating show Eldens dröm ('The Fire’s Dream') from Luleåbiennalen 1994. The performance was presented on the ice of Gültzauudden, the Gültzau Bay, in Luleå and told the story of Mr. Fire who falls in love with a snowflake. It was a sad story of longing and facing obstacles. Dan Lestander and Ricky Sandberg, who created the performance, hoped the audience might shed tears which would freeze to ice on their cheeks in the cold.
We are continuously working on adding information about previous editions to the archive here on our website. If you have your own stories or images that you would like to share with us, please feel free to send them to paulina.granat@konstframjandet.se
